To produce scientific knowledge on youth and to build a network of national and international researchers engaged in scientific research in various thematic areas. Our scientific work also relies on an openness to different theoretical and methodological traditions, as well as to different domains of knowledge.

To systematize validated data and information about the youth population in various aspects of social life, at both national and international level. In particular, to produce and disseminate primary and secondary indicators that identify and portray the challenges faced by Portuguese youth in contemporary society. Another priority is to produce, whenever possible, longitudinal series, in order to understand the historical evolution on youth trajectories. OPJ also aims to develop a virtual archive with an online bibliographic database that includes, among other works, Portuguese doctoral theses on youth.

To monitor public policies, programs and civil society actions in the field of youth through independent studies, reports and assessments or through scientific research commissioned by political agents and institutions, as well as civic and non-governmental organizations. OPJ’s action will be guided by the principles of independence and scientific rigor in the production of specialized information that enables decision makers and promoters to set goals and implementation stages, and to assess the results of their measures.

To bring scientific research on youth to wider audiences through several platforms: via its website (by sharing systematized and up-to-date content online); through regular events, such as conferences and seminars open to the general public; by specialized courses and training aimed to specific audiences; or scientific internships for young students in partnership with Ciência Viva or Verão na ULisboa.

To participate in the major public debates regarding youth issues. This intervention will be made either by collaborating with the media, by participating in actions organized by the protagonists of these debates or by organizing debates with these same protagonists.
